Mental health of people with neglected tropical diseases: towards a person-centred approach

Abstract
People with neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are at high risk for mental health conditions, and people with mental conditions are at higher risk of an NTD. The distress caused due to the direct impact of the NTD, as well as stigma and discrimination, can lead to mental, neurological and substance use problems and thoughts of self-harm or suicide. This document calls attention to the mental health needs of people affected by NTDs and to the importance of collaborative action and an integrated approach to address those needs. It describes effective ways of supporting affected people and their carers and addressing community stigma and discrimination.
