Abstract
The objective of this work was to characterize the temporal evolution of new leprosy cases in the city of Petrolina - PE. This is a longitudinal time series study. The new resident cases of Petrolina / PE were analyzed from 2005 to 2014. The sociodemographic and clinical variables were derived from the Notification Disease Information System, and three epidemiological and two operational indicators were calculated, using absolute, relative and frequency. rate of change. 2219 new cases were notified, and the following factors predominated: female sex, age group over 15 years, mixed race/color, incomplete elementary education, paucibacillary operational classification and dimorphous clinical form. The rate of variation of all three epidemiological indicators increased. Among the operational indicators, the rate of variation of the proportion of contacts increased, while the degree of physical incapacity decreased. The indicators demonstrated the hyperendemicity of leprosy, with deficient quality of attendance at healthcare services and deficient surveillance of cases.
