Mangaluru: Dr Derek A. Lobo, one of the world’s foremost authorities in leprosy control and a respected public-health leader, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, scientific excellence and unwavering commitment to the most marginalised communities.
Five decades dedicated to eliminating leprosy
Born in Attavar, Mangaluru, Dr Lobo devoted over 50 years of his life to eradicating leprosy and reducing the deep social stigma associated with the disease. His exceptional field expertise and commitment led to his appointment with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Bangladesh, where he played a pivotal role in the country achieving elimination of leprosy as a public-health problem in 1998.
