Introduction
Before multidrug therapy (MDT) was introduced in the 1980s leprosy was treated with dapsone monotherapy. Resistance to dapsone has been reported since the early 1960s. Rifampicin is the main component of MDT for leprosy. It is therefore important to monitor the emergence of rifampicin-resistant strains. Fluoroquinolones are advised in case of rifampicin resistance. Clofazimine resistance is still rare.
