[Leprosy patients' efforts to prevent increasing degrees of disability]

Abstract

Leprosy is a chronic disease that mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves and leads to ulceration of mutilations and deformities that can cause social, psychological, and economic problems. The purpose of this research is to know the efforts of leprosy patients in preventing the increase of leprosy disability. The method used in this research is descriptive. Population in this research is all leprosy patients who follow KPD activity at Puskesmas Sutojayan and Ponggok district of Blitar. The sample size of 26 people was taken with total sample technique. The data were collected by questionnaires and observation. The result of this research stated that the effort done by leprosy patients in preventing the increase of leprosy degree is 42.3% in good category, 50% in enough category, and the rest 7.7% in less category. It’s because there are still leprosy patients who don’t exercise legs and fingers to prevent stiffness in that part. Expected role of health center and health worker to increase support and motivation to leprosy patient in doing effort to prevent degree of disability.
