Data give evidence of: 1) a progressive decrease of the infections with a significant fall in the school age group; 2) an almost constant number of infectious patients; 3) a growing importance of the detection by private practioners. Passive detection detects patients who, in most cases, are more seriously infected than those detected by active detection. Active detection is the only effective leprosy prophylactic method.
