Objective

to analyze the proportion of new cases of leprosy according to color and ethnicity in the region of Brazil with the highest number of priority municipalities for leprosy actions of the Healthy Brazil Program, using a temporal analysis technique.

Methods

Ecological study, of temporal trends, carried out with data from the seven (07) states of the North region of Brazil. The variables were obtained from the Information System for Notifiable Diseases. The temporal trend of the indicator “proportion of new cases of leprosy according to race/skin color” was calculated in the Joinpoint® program.

Results

In the North region of Brazil, between 2004 and 2024, the trend in the proportion of new cases of leprosy was increasing among self-declared indigenous people. Among self-declared black people, the trend was increasing between 2020 and 2024. Among white people, the trend of leprosy cases was decreasing over the years. Among the states, the trend was variable, but it was evident that black, brown and indigenous people were the most affected.

Conclusion

Prevention and control actions for leprosy in PHC in the Amazon were not able to mitigate the social determinants related to race. Within the scope of the Healthy Brazil Program, nurses can expand leprosy monitoring indicators for priority municipalities, considering the main social determinants of the locations and carrying out screening of all populations at risk within the scope of primary health care.
