Abstract: As a reestablishment of a long-lasting cooperation members of the Department for GlobaHealth and Dev elopment of the Medical University of Graz visited the Doctor Typhagne Memoriable Charitable Trust in Salem, India. This report covers history and epidemiology of leprosy in southern India. Globally, India still accounts for 60% of the total new case load. Therefore, Leprosy Case Detection Campaigns were initiated, cov ering micro-areas known to be endemic pockets of leprosy. House to house searches are done in which every person is physically examined regarding leprosy suspicious lesions leading to an increase in local case detection rates in Salem district by about one-quarter.
