Leprosy is an infectious disease, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which encompasses a wide clinical spectrum based on the host immune response. At one end of the spectrum, tuberculoid leprosy (T-lep) patients manifest a strong cell-mediated immune response that restricts the growth of the pathogen, while at the other extreme, lepromatous leprosy (L-lep) patients have a weak cell-mediated immune response associated with dissemination of the infection. This spectrum also correlates with the levels of apoptosis in lesions, or evidence of programmed cell death via the activation of caspases and proteases.
