Method: a descriptive, epidemiological and cross-sectional study using the quantitative method. Secondary data were derived from FIN / SINAN, provided by the SES of city of João Pessoa/Paraíba/Brazil. For their analysis was used SPSS version 20.0. The research project had been approved by the Ethics Committee, CAAE 11076312.1.0000.5188. Results: the incidence was 20,1/100.000 in 2010 and 22,7/100.000 inhabitants in 2011. In both surveys there was a predominance of males (52,0% in 2010, 53,7% in 2011), brown (57,0% in 2010, 57,3% in 2011), and low schooling (53,7% in 2010, 56,3% in 2011). Over 75% of cases were classified with zero disability and none nerve affected. Conclusion: it was observed a very high average for leprosy endemicity, indicating the need for strategies to promoting the control of the disease.
