METHODS: Cross-sectional epidemiological study analyzing deaths from leprosy registered on the SIM system from 2000 to 2007 and identified on SINAN system in Mato Grosso. RESULTS: 88 of the 129 registered leprosy deaths were identified on the SINAN system as leprosy cases. 36 of these had been discharged after being cured. The most frequent primary cause of death was nonspecific leprosy (n = 88, 75.9%). CONCLUSION: half the leprosy death records in Mato Grosso include cured cases and these therefore did not die from leprosy. The cured and those who died during polychemotherapy were characterized by older age, low education level or having been lepromatous cases.
