The Leprosy Control Programs in the three government areas promote awareness campaigns to stimulate detection of new cases. The processes of production-circulationappropriation of feelings on leprosy are investigated through analysis of the reception of educational material, produced in Brazil (1972-2008), by leprosy patients and health professionals of the public health system of the city of Rio de Janeiro. A qualitative survey (2005-2009) collected and analyzed the educational material, active observation, semistructured interviews and focal group. For data analysis, hermeneutic-dialectic and the semiology of social discourses were used. It is discussed that the leprosy programs present vertical communication based on hierarchical relations between producer-receiver for the homogenization of the public and the content. There is a void in speech transition from leprosy to Hansen’s disease for the population. For health professionals and leprosy patients, the material should be focused on the seriousness of the illness and its social-cultural dimensions. It can be concluded that the programs need to promote communication strategies and actions compatible with the local demands, focused on the specificities of the illness and of regions.
