Objective: to investigate the knowledge of health professionals about leprosy and its relationship with late diagnosis.

Method: this is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach whose data were obtained through a questionnaire on leprosy and attitudes towards practices involving the care applied before and after a health training on the subject. Fisher's exact test was used to recheck statistical significance.

Results: 67 health professionals working in the health care network of 20 municipalities in the Alto Vale do Rio do Peixe region in Santa Catarina participated in the study. Statistical significance was found (p-value 0.015) in the number of correct answers in the post-training questionnaire in relation to the pre-training questionnaire. The regular concept prevailed (60 to 69% of correct answers) about knowledge on leprosy in relation to the scale of correct answers.

Conclusion: the training carried out improved the knowledge of the participating professionals, however, it revealed regular knowledge on the subject. Public policies to combat leprosy need to be strengthened, with everyone's engagement, reflecting on qualified care.
