This article is based on a qualitative project that focused on women with disabilities in Binga in Zimbabwe and their participation in government and non-governmental organizations’ (NGOs) initiatives, as well as their access to formal support for self-initiated projects. To achieve this aim, a story-telling approach was used, complemented with semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions involving forty-two participants both with and without disabilities. The findings indicate that women with disabilities, like their male counterparts, had a strong desire to participate in the development initiatives of their communities. And while both men and women with disabilities encountered challenges to participate, the research shows that the challenges encountered by women to access formal support to enable their participation was largely a result of living with a disability.
